Our next activity is the Rock and Abseil School at Bungonia State Recreation Area east of Goulburn from 4th to 6th April 2008. The activity is an action pack weekend comprising both Patrol camping in a standing camp format with abseiling instruction. The abseiling instruction will be delivered by Don Hays a commercially qualified abseil instructor. The activity will further be supported by Buffalo, who is our abseil specialist.

The camp fee of $45 comprises the abseil instruction of $20 and $25 for food and camping charges payable to NSW Parks.

This will be a "cold" camp in that no wood fires are allowed. Our cooking will occur on our Cobb Ovens, so look forward to baked legs of lamb and roast potatoes on this camp! As usual on a PATROL camp, each patrol will camp and cook separately from every other patrol.

The abseil instruction will take the following general format:

  • Basic instruction including communication protocols and safety horizontally first and then from a 4m ledge
  • Scouts demonstrating their knowledge and proficiency of the above issues
  • Each Scout undertaking at least 5 abseils, around 15m high.

On completion of the above, each Scout will earn the Abseil proficiency badge.

All scouts are asked to participate. We will cater for all levels of nerves and no-one needs to be concerned. You also need the time under canvass even if you only do the smaller abseils on this camp. Smaller abseils still count for the Abseil proficiency badge.

Please return the application/notification forms and money on 1 April 2008 in order that final arrangements for food and transport can be made.

Parents are welcome, but will camp separately from the Patrols, with the leaders.
